How I'm Still PR-ing 10 Years In

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit." - Will Durrant

It's easy to know what you need to do, but a whole different dealio to actually do it. I think it's equally as easy to see some flashy ✅ and ❌ post on social media and become engrossed in the newest, "quickest" way to add 20lbs on your squat or lose 20lbs off your body.

The truth is much more boring.

It takes time of you repeating the same actions most of the time to reach your goals. The good news is that there is a lot of freedom in being consistent! Embracing the "most" part of "most of the time" means there's room for stuff like family, loved ones, friends, and passions while making gains.

Just like you can’t eat salad once and realistically expect a 6-pack to sprout, you will not erase all of your hard work by taking a week off to see your parents. One of the most powerful things you can do to help build consistency is to delay your gratification. That is, do the thing. Trust it’s worth doing, and walk away.

Squatting for a week and getting mad that your legs can’t crush a watermelon yet is bound to leave you frustrated and not motivated to lift. Show up. Then do it again, indefinitely, and watch your life transform.

Crash diets prey on this fixation with instant gratification. They rely on being extreme, usually for short amounts of time because it's simply not feasible to continue for a number of reasons. That's not you failing the thing, that's that thing failing you.

Big change takes time. Find joy in the journey and celebrate the little wins like big wins. Little by little becomes a lot. Little wins are big wins.
